the simplest ones are skeletonized keys, with all the non operating parts cut away, I once hammered a master lock key flat to make one that would fit all keyway curtain varients, hammering will widen the thing, so you will have to file away the width also. you will need a flat file. if you use other material for the piece make sure that you can harden it against twisting along the shaft.
