Postby kendale » 3 Mar 2005 18:24

Hi
If Anybody has taken a training course which offered a C & G accredited qualification in locksmithing you could be entitled to a refund, please feel free to email myself or pinky we might be able to help.

this may be of interest to cass especially, i cant put much up yet until verified but this is good news against a rogue trainer, so if you did a certain so called city and guilds course supposedly valid in up to 120 countries then drop ken or i an email and we will help you towards gaining a refund

you mean it`s not recognised outside Whitley bay!
This is good news indeed for all those like cass who have paid a lot of money for little return.

Rogue trainers beware!

CITY AND GUILDS CERTIFICATE

Postby Roger Cook » 17 Apr 2005 1:12

I have spotted a couple of locksmiths who advertise their City and Guilds qualification. I spoke to one last night who obtained their 'qualification' from Anvil training. I suggested that they check out its authenticity before they continue to advertise it , especially as I understand the MOD is now taking legal action in this case ...

I have many city and guilds in subjects other than locksmithing, and i certainly wouldn't class city and guilds as 'worthless pieces of paper'.

I'd class it as exactly that if it wasn't recognised...

I could offer a City & Guilds course in nosepicking and hand out certificates at the end...

A search on the City & Guilds of London Institute website, for locksmithing, turned up this result:
http://www.city-and-guilds.co.uk/pls/cg ... _exclude=1

And the same for nosepicking:
http://www.city-and-guilds.co.uk/pls/cg ... _exclude=1

Seems that both examples of an awarded certificate are only useful for wiping the A double S.

I for one have been invited to assess candidates for the city & guild qualifications. The assessment last's for two year's before any certificates are issued.
Locksmithing isn't one of them because as far as any training board is concerned, it falls under the carpentry category in as far as lock fitting!
And that certainly cant be achieved in a two week course!
As for lockpicking, it's not reconised at all, so if anybody is told that there training is reconised it's a complete load of twaddle and probably the papers or certificates that are issued will only be reconised by the people that train you!
I'd rather have a roll of andrex, as it more of use to me!
An open mind can open anything

i too am NVQ Assessor ( D32 , D33 units ) im also an internal and external qualified assessor.

the city and guilds is not offered in 2 weeks but in just 1 day, it involves assessments in 12 core tasks, ie , health and safety , preparing the work area , tidying up properly etc, not in locksmithing.
the certificate is whats known as an inhouse portfolio certificate, it is recognised only by the company that the candidate is trained for and is non transferabe, it costs approx £90, though the firm offering it charge £1100 for it.

the reason this particular case could lead to refunds , is that the company offering the certificate are not c & g accredited, which means they cant actualy offer this certificate, though do.
this certificate is endorsed by city and guilds , but is an intro to the workplace assessment, and not to be confused with a full city and guilds qualification.

its no more than a clever marketing ploy by the training company involved, and at the end of the day a worthless bit of paper, that wont get you employment in this country, let alone over 120 countries as advertised.

any piece of paper that offers you a qualification in just 1 day is pointless, a true nvq takes between 16 weeks and 5 years dependent upon industry, the only genuine training organisation to offer a new NVQ is the MLA , dont be fooled by cheap unrecognised copies.

I think I might be able to shed some light on why some firms were keen to offer C&G in locksmithing however tenuous. When someone has completed their career in the military they are entitled to resettlement grants to help qualify them for life outside of the service. These grants need to meet set recommendations and for most C&G creditation is required. Because of people wanting to do these type of courses and needing creditation to pay, a gap appeared and was dutifully filled. Untill there is recoqnised training and a certified profession these gaps will be filled by mis-guided hopefulls.

filling a gap is fine, but charging £1100 for it for no training is criminal. until a real qualification exists then this should be avoided.

The elc grant is also obtainable for any non certificated course at the discretion of the elc officer dealing.

I find it as offensive as you pinky that people are taking advantage like this and the costs involved. Was only trying to explain why people go on these courses in the first place and not justify the courses in any way.
