My Picks!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

They're made out of street cleaner bristles and I tried to use heat shrink for the handles but the smallest stuff I could find was too large. I wrapped the grip part with some hockey tape then used the heat shrink (Hence the burn marks of one of them  )

Makes for a nice no slip grip and it's also easier on the fingers :)

We can do this the nice way or the mafia way, doesn't matter which way really, because you'll still wind up with broken shins.

Hi LocFest. Hope you enjoy the site. This really isn't the place for an introduction, though. Check out the FAQ section of the website.

Got some bristles at the beginning of the week, and thought I'd throw my fisrt 4 attempts into the forum for some feedback. The handles, if anyone is interested, are two layers of heatshrink from a local modelling shop. I've put a SouthOrd pick in the picture for scale

Image

I've put them in order of manufacture, the pick at the bottom was my first, and the rake I made last night. The half diamond is a bit flexible, but only enough to straighten out (it actually curves toward the diamond).
Incidentally, while making these I got to wondering has anyone tried making picks with a curve in, to help getting around the wards in pin tumbler locks. Seen end on they would look something like this ) and (. I suppose it would mean double the number of picks but I thought they could make life easier. Any thoughts?

Go find a little post I made a while back in a thread concerning paracentric keyways.

But, in answer to your question, yes I have made them that way.

my thoughts

Postby raimundo » 14 Mar 2005 10:05

by putting a curve on the metal, you not only make the pick specific to one curvature of the keyway, you also make it specific to one level of the keyway the answer is to round the square edges on the pick () so that both sides are rounded toward the top and bottm edges, so it can swim like a fish. In really bad keyways such as medecos keymark, picks can be made of piano wire. these are surpriseingly quick and easy to make and are completely round in crosssection. they are a bit springy depending on the hardness and diameter of the wire used. 8)
