Homemade Schlage cut-away cylinder

Homemade Schlage cut-away cylinder

Postby Kayvon » 22 Mar 2005 18:26

Ooh... I feel a tingling excitement of starting a new thread.

So I managed to get a hold of a few different Schlage cylinders (I believe they were removed from deadbolts--got them off eBay) and I thought to myself, "Self, it would be nice to make a cut-away cylinder out of one of these."
So I did.

Here the key is inserted and the plug is turned, so all the driver pins are lined up:

Here's a straight-on shot when the key isn't completely insterted:

And another (forgive the glare):

So, what do you think? I like the idea of a cut-away Schlage because it's a better-quality lock than most cut-aways for sale out there. I'm hoping it'll give me a better feel of what's going on inside the lock when I'm trying other picking styles. Now I just need a way to mount it.
I'm thinking about making a few more of these and selling them on the forum. It takes quite a while to make one (a little under a couple hours), but I enjoy it and I could use the extra cash to buy more locks (note the irony). Would anyone be interested in them?

Pretty cool
What did you use on it? A dremel?

Yes. And a grinder, a pocket knife (smooth off shavings), a tubular knife (smooth inside where the grinder had prevented driver pins from moving), a sander, a dental pick (to replace the springs/drivers), and probably a couple other things that don't come to mind right now.

You should try using an angled grinder. This tool will have the lock ground down in about 45 minutes.

It was a lot of fun making it and I'm thinking that with some practice I can cut the time down that it takes to make them. It was my first try, after all, and I was going very slowly because I wasn't too terribly sure how I was going to cut it.

How much would these be worth? Time permitting, I'll make a couple more in the next week or two and sell them. I have no clue what to ask for them, though (and I hate it when people list items without giving a price; does that bug anyone else?).
