I use a pair of vice grips with the lock in my hand. (I do this for a living and a lot as well) Pull the tail piece out as far as it will go and clamp the vice grip right next to the square tube that covers it.
Once that is done, I then pick the lock about 45 degrees counter clock-wise and then release the vice grips.
After that it's a simple matter of pushing that interior spindle back in, and slightly rotating the plug until it pops out. Sometimes I give the spindle a rap on the floor to jar it loose.
There is another method to remove the cylinder while the lock is on the door, but really it is best to completely remove the lock for a good inspection of all the working parts anyways.
