No keys for weiser knob sets!

Postby jurvis1 » 23 Mar 2005 21:00

I found that using a vice to hold the tailpiece out while I picked the lock 90 degrees to the right and then used a key extractor worked for pulling the cylinder on a Weiser knob after about a half an hour trying to do it with a key with all cuts a six and a rubberband and banging the top pins or a picking and pulling at the same time worked best. Does anyone else know of an easier way to re-key these when the keys are missing?
I can't see the lock through the tumblers!

I feel some deja vu here. If I'm not mistaken if you pick the wieser knobsets counter clockwise then pull the tail piece out and continue to rotate, somewhere around 60 degrees or so the face plate should just pop out. I've done this dozens of times in my job (not a locksmith) and it really shouldn't be too tough at all. The only problem is when you forget which way to pick it and realize too late that you've picked it in the wrong direction (as I don't have a plug spinner).

What, you can't just rotate it past vertical the wrong way? Or is it a matter of how you rotate it, not just the ultimate position?

I use a pair of vice grips with the lock in my hand. (I do this for a living and a lot as well) Pull the tail piece out as far as it will go and clamp the vice grip right next to the square tube that covers it.

Once that is done, I then pick the lock about 45 degrees counter clock-wise and then release the vice grips.

After that it's a simple matter of pushing that interior spindle back in, and slightly rotating the plug until it pops out. Sometimes I give the spindle a rap on the floor to jar it loose.

There is another method to remove the cylinder while the lock is on the door, but really it is best to completely remove the lock for a good inspection of all the working parts anyways.

Hope that makes sense. If someone wants I'll describe the other method in a seperate post.
