Odd Shape over Padlock plug

Postby MudSlinger » 29 Apr 2005 12:51

Hello again, I dont know the particular name for this device so I had a hard time finding it on the FAQ and searchbut I encountered it on a recently aquired Padlock Master No 27 i believe.

I have a picture but basically befor i put my precious picks into it i want to know wheather or not it is somesort of anti-pick protection or something else. Heres the pic I drew it but I assume its pretty common so I think someone will recognize it.

I'm assuming that the cover over the plug is only there to prevent you from turning the key too far. I have seen similar covers on the plugs of a bunch of my Master locks, including my Master Smith and Wesson pistol lock. I don't think it's an anti-pick cover or anything, since the locks that have them are generally more simple and open within a minute or so =)

What's the point of that? Surely you can't damage it by turning it "improperly."

With cheaper locks, you can have pins fall into the keyway if you turn it 180 degrees. There are numerous problems among cheap locks that can be brought out by key misuse, but i can't think of any but ONE right now =)

I always though it was to prevent idiots from taking a drill to the lock. It won't prevent you from drilling the pins but it would make taking an oversized bit to the plug a pain.

Besides the obvious fact that most master locks will fall open if you look at them hard enough can you elaborate on what you ment by it's a waste of a try? I've taken apart plenty, and I've never seen anything to prevent someone with a clue from drilling one.

Look - nearly every lock from Master or the like - gone in around 30 seconds - the latter take that long.

You all think and want to just ruin these locks, but you invest no time - you now see great picks to do so, and you're charged hundreds of dollars...and you want perfection?

Learn to pick, or suffer through hell, and chinese locks - i offer a neat resource and quit trying..

Have fun!

As a service to you who do not speak idiot, I have taken it upon myself to translate as much as I can. I have many very stupid friends, and have gotten quite good. But I think this post uses a little different dialect that I'm not used to.

Look, nearly every lock from Master can be picked in around thirty senconds (the better ones take that long).

You all want to just get past these locks, but don't want to invest time. There are special picks for them, but they are outrageously expensive (?).

To get past these locks quickly, it is easier just to learn how to pick. *portion of text excluded due to translatative barrier*

Have fun!

Is it just me, or does his post count appear to be dropping? At this rate, he'll have a clean slate in 11 day's time, whereupon the next episode reveals Sidney & Ms Parker hot on the trail of him investigating a rogue meter-maid. To be continued...
