Hi, I've been playing with a couple Yale deadbolt locks on different doors, and while I can pick the lock and get the plug to rotate, I can't make the latch move. I hit a stop after about a 3/4 turn and no matter how hard I push, I just bend my tension wrench. I tried using the edge of another key, but that just bent the key! Am I not applying enough force? Should I use a screwdriver? I'm fairly sure I'm turning the right way, but I would appreciate any suggestions.

Did you pick it the wrong direction? That'd do it. Try picking it the other way. You need to pick it in the same direction you would turn the key to unlock. Not sure if that's your prob. Just a thought.

Dead bolt

Postby mupet » 16 May 2005 20:40

If you are sure that you have picked it the correct way check that there is no presure on the bolt you should have a little movment in the door in the locked position to make the lock operate properly in the first place.
If there is no movment you mite have to lift the door or pull it towards you to ghet the bolt to retract

I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents here.

I've been working on a lock on a friends door for a long time. It's a yale with (I believe) 1 spool pin. I kept getting frustrated becasue I would almost pick it (the plug would rotate slightly, but not budge from there) but couldn't get any further. I thought I was getting caught up on the spool. Well, it turns out that the door was just very poorly hung, and I really had to lift and pull in on the knob to rotate the bolt.

I had picked the lock a month ago, but didn't realize it.

Well, I won't have access to the lock for a while, but I think it was a poorly hung door like you said. I was turning the right way and turning almost 180 degrees, so I don't think it was a trick pin. I had the same problem with a door at home, but when I lifted and twisted the door the deadbolt came right out. Thanks!
