W-Lok... Any advice

Postby zeke79 » 31 Aug 2005 21:50

Well, I have a W-Lok to play around with now. Anyone here ever messed with one of these things? Just curious if anyone had some pointers before I started pulling this thing apart :) .

Looks like an Abloy knock-off.

Actually if you could see the key in person it is quite different than an abloy. I wont have a chance to tear the cylinder apart tonight but I am really looking forward to it. :P

I would love to know how you got an evaluation sample lock.... As far as I know W-locks are used by the US military in similar situations to S&G environmental locks. The S&Gs are the disc tumblers I pmed you about- 4 discs, no false notches. I suspect the W locks are similar. Try using a cut off allen wrench to provide tension to the back of the plug.

Chucklz, thanks for the tips for tension. By the looks of the key this lock should be 9 disks. As far as where did the evaluation sample come from, W-Lok passed out evaluation samples to selected locksmiths when they first started building locks. One of the locks happen to be given to a locksmith friend of mine by W-Lok and that is how it made it to me.

vector40, you are correct that is a schlage bump key  .

I was checking out the governments site and they used both Abloys and W-Loks. They said there is no longer a need for that type of padlock (open shackle medium security), so they don't use them anymore.
Does the W-Lok use Disc Blocking?

I have had great success bumping locks. As I have previously posted, I prefer to cut what is called a "10 10 10" key as it seems to work better when you have a lock that is pinned at a deepest cut. This can easily be done by taking a piece of shim stock of the desired thickness you want to increase your depth of cut and place it underneath your blank and then cut your key by code to the deepest cuts for the lock you are bumping. You can also create a 10 10 10 key from a 999 key by doing the same thing with a duplicator, just insert your shim under the blank to be cut. I have also found that like what has been mentioned before, what you use to strike the bump key with makes a huge difference on the success you will have!!. I really need to get some bumping videos posted, maybe I will do that when I get some spare time :P .
